美国英语写作顶尖教材【The Elements of Style】

关于作者:

William Strunk, Jr. first used his own book, The Elements of Style, in 1919 for his English 8 course at Cornell University. The book was published in 1935 by Oliver Strunk.

E. B. White was a student in Professor Strunk's class at Cornell, and used "the little book" for himself. Commissioned by Macmillan to revise Strunk's book, White edited the 1959 and 1972 editions of The Elements of Style.

名家评论:

"Buy it, study it, enjoy it. It's as timeless as a book can be in our age of volubility."
— The New York Times

"No book in shorter space, with fewer words, will help any writer more than this persistent little volume."
— The Boston Globe

"White is one of the best stylists and most lucid minds in this country. What he says and his way of saying it are equally rewarding."
— The Wall Street Journal

"The book remains a nonpareil: direct, correct, and delightful."
— The New Yorker

". . . Should be the daily companion of anyone who writes for a living, and for that matter, anyone who writes at all."
— Greensboro (N.C.) Daily News

"This excellent book, which should go off to college with every freshman, is recognized as the best book of its kind we have."
— St. Paul Dispatch – Pioneer Press

"It's hard to imagine an engineer or a manager who doesn't need to express himself in English prose as part of his job. It's also hard to imagine a writer who will not be improved by a liberal application of The Elements of Style."
— Telephone Engineer & Management

我特别喜欢的是E. P. White的一本名为《Elements of Style》的小书,三十多年前再三读之,获益良多。
- Zhang Wuchang, an economist from Hong Kong University.

A GUIDE TO CRITICAL THINKING
by VINCENT RYAN RUGGIERO

INTRODUCTION

Beyond Feelings is designed to introduce you to the subject of critical thinking. The subject is undoubtedly new to you because it is not taught in most elementary and secondary schools. In fact, until fairly recently it was not taught in most colleges. During the 1960s and much of the 1970s the emphasis was more on subjectivity than on objectivity, more on feeling than on thought.

Over the past ten years, however, a number of studies of America's schools have criticized the neglect of critical think, and a growing number of educators and leaders in business, industry, and the professions have urged the development of new courses and teaching materials to overcome that neglect.

It is no exaggeration to say that critical thinking is one of the most important subjects you will study in college regardless of your academic major. The quality of your schoolwork, your efforts in your career, your contributions to community life, and your conduct of personal affairs will all depend on your ability to solve problems and make decisions.

The book has four main sections. The first, "The Context," will help you to understand such important concepts as individuality, thinking, truth, knowledge, and opinion and to overcome attitudes and ideas that obstruct critical thinking. The second section, "The Problems," will teach you to recognize and avoid nine common errors that often occur, singly or in combination, during the thinking process. The third section, "A Strategy," will help you acquire the various skills used in addressing problems and issues. This section includes tips on identifying and overcoming you personal intellectual weaknesses, as well as techniques for becoming more observant, clarifying issues and conducting inquiry, interpreting evidence, analyzing other people's views, and making sound judgments.

At the end of each chapter you will find a number of applications to challenge your critical thinking and provide exercise for your skills. These applications cover problems and issues both timely and timeless. The fourth section of the book, "Some Contemporary Issues," presents additional important issues that continue to occupy the attention of the best thinkers of our time.

In brief, Beyond Feelings is designed to help you acquire the intellectual skills necessary to solve the exciting problems of today and tomorrow.

Providing an accessible introduction to the study of word-formation, this text focuses specifically on English. Assuming no prior linguistic knowledge, Ingo Plag explains the fundamentals of word-formation, demonstrating how morphemes--the elements of a word's internal structure--can function to relate words to other words, and to create new words. Students are encouraged to undertake their own morphological analysis of English words, and are introduced to the methodological tools for obtaining and analyzing relevant data.

INTRODUCTION

Prepositions pose more problems for the non-native speaker or learner of English than any other part of speech. Why? Prepositions are just little words that never change in form; they are pronounced softly, in unstressed syllables; they aren't even given capital letters in book titles; native speakers choose the correct ones without thinking. How can they be confusing?

The word "preposition" has a straightforward definition: a word placed before a noun or pronoun to define its relationship with another word in the sentence. For the learner of English, however, prepositions are anything but straightforward.

—Prepositions are difficult, if not impossible, to define without using other prepositions.

Example:
In the sentence, "The book is on the table," what does on mean?
On means "above and supported by."

—In no other language are the prepositions (if they exist at all) the exact equivalents of English prepositions.

Example:

Spanish English
Vive en Washington. He lives in Washington.
Vive en la Avenida New Jersey. He lives on New Jersey Avenue.
El está en el aeropuerto. He is at the airport.
Estoy pensando en ti. I am thinking about you, or
I am thinking of you.

—Many preposition words can also be adverbs or conjunctions.

Examples:

the preposition down She walked down the hill.
the adverb down He put the book down.
the preposition after She took a nap after lunch.
the conjunction after She went outside after she put the book down.

—Many prepositions can indicate more than one meaning or relationship.

Examples with after:

later than We rested after lunch.
in pursuit of The cat is after the mouse.
because of He was angry after the way she acted.
in the style of This is a painting after Picasso.
continuously She worked night after night.

The Oxford Guide to English Usage
English usage is a subject as wide as the English language itself. By far
the greater part of usage, however, raises no controversies and poses no
problems for native speakers of English, just because it is their natural
idiom. But there are certain limited areas --particular sounds, spellings,
words, and constructions--about which there arises uncertainty,
difficulty, or disagreement. The proper aim of a usage guide is to resolve
these problems, rather than describe the whole of current usage.

The Oxford Guide to English Usage has this aim. Within the limits just
indicated, it offers guidance in as clear, concise, and systematic a
manner as possible. In effecting its aims it makes use of five special
features, explained below.

In the Guide the subject of usage is divided into four fields:
word formation, pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. Each field is
covered by a separate section of the book, and each of the four
sections has its own alphabetical arrangement of entries. Each entry
is headed by its title in bold type. All the words that share a
particular kind of spelling, sound, or construction can therefore be
treated together. This makes for both economy and comprehensiveness
of treatment. Note that Pronunciation is in two parts: A deals with
the pronunciation of particular letters, or groups of letters, while B
is an alphabetical list of words whose pronunciation gives trouble.

Harvard Business School, Boston, USA.

Most executives know the basics of negotiation; some are spectacularly adept. Yet even experienced negotiators routinely leave money on the table, end up in deadlock, damage relationships, or allow conflicts to spiral. They fall prey to common mistakes that keep them from solving the right negotiation problem. In any negotiation, each side ultimately chooses between two options: accepting a deal or taking its best no-deal option--that is, the course of action if a deal were not possible. As a negotiator, you seek to advance your interests by persuading the other side to say yes to a proposal that meets your interests better than your best no-deal option. Because the other side will say yes only to a proposal that meets its own interests better than its best no-deal option, you must understand and shape your counterpart's decision so that it chooses in its own interest what you want. Far from being exercises in manipulation, understanding your counterpart's interests and shaping the decision so that the other side agrees to a proposal for its own reasons are the keys to jointly creating and claiming sustainable value from a negotiation. In this article, James Sebenius compares good negotiating practice with bad, providing examples from the business world and insights from 50 years of research and analysis on negotiation. The author describes six common mistakes that result in merely effective negotiation: neglecting your counterpart's problem, letting price bulldoze other interests, letting positions drive out interests, searching too hard for common ground, neglecting no-deal alternatives, and failing to correct for skewed vision.

《世界是平坦的-21世纪简史》(The World Is Flat)

中文名称:世界是平坦的 21世纪简史
英文名称:The World Is Flat
发行时间:2005年
作者:托马斯·弗里德曼(Thomas Friedman)

Thomas L. Friedman is not so much a futurist, which he is sometimes called, as a presentist. His aim, in his new book, The World Is Flat, as in his earlier, influential Lexus and the Olive Tree, is not to give you a speculative preview of the wonders that are sure to come in your lifetime, but rather to get you caught up on the wonders that are already here. The world isn't going to be flat, it is flat, which gives Friedman's breathless narrative much of its urgency, and which also saves it from the Epcot-style polyester sheen that futurists--the optimistic ones at least--are inevitably prey to.

书评:是什么碾平了世界?
作者:马丁·沃尔夫(Martin Wolf)
